Exercise IBSAMAR IV Comes to an End

Indian Navy, Brazilian Navy and South African Navy concluded Exercise IBSAMAR IV on November 7, 2014 at Cape Town Harbour.

The exercise was divided into five (5) stages, stage one was mobilization week which was the mobilization of forces in the exercise areas namely Silvermine Complex and Naval Base Simon’s Town from 13 October 2014 to 19 October 2014.

Stage two was alongside with arrival of the Indian and the Brazilian ships, including courtesy calls, social activities and planning briefings from 20 October 2014 to 24 October 2014.

Stage three was the 1st Sea Phase which was conducted following a serialized program from 27 October 2014 to 31 October 2014. Stage four was 2nd Sea Phase from 03 November 2014 to 06 November 2014 and last stage was demobilization week from 10 November 2014 to 14 November 2014 with forces returning to their own HQ’s.

The 2nd Sea phase was dictated by Exercise Control Centre in Silvermine as the phase was dubbed “free play” week, the scenario and events were unplanned as the forces deployed at sea had to be ready for any type of attack. The scenarios were in such a way that they simulated the real time war situation based on the idea that during war eighty percent of the time is spent on waiting.

The intention of the concept of Ex IBSAMAR IV was to create a framework for an integrated Naval Force, challenging staff and commanders at the various tactical levels with time, distance and space realities, in essence it was to reflect cooperation between different Naval Forces over a wide front with different commanders supporting the operations on land, sea and air.
