USS San Diego Hosts “Thinking Pink” Event

The amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22) and 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU)’s Second Class Petty Officer and Sergeant Association (SCPOSA) hosted a “Thinking Pink” event aboard the ship, Oct. 30.

During the event, Sailors and Marines gathered on the mess decks of the ship for the special dinning event held to allow the crew an opportunity to reflect on the reality of breast cancer and encourage members to be proactive about breast health.

Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Maurice Harris, president of the Second Class Petty Officer and Sergeant Association, said:

When we host events like this while out to sea, it helps us stay connected to family and friends who maybe affected by this condition.

I wanted the crew to understand that breast cancer does not just affect one particular population, it could affect anyone.

The SCPOSA volunteers decorated their mess decks service covers with the signature pink ribbons as they served the evening meal to the crew reminding members to reflect on the journey of many survivors and relish in the memory of those whose battle with breast cancer have ended.

San Diego is a part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 11th MEU, is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
