HMS Somerset Helps Launch Poppy Appeal. Leaves Cardiff

Authorities

Royal Navy warship HMS Somerset sailed from Cardiff last week after helping launch the 2014 Poppy Appeal in the region.

More than 2,500 people visited the Type 23 frigate on her first UK port visit since returning from a successful 6 month deployment to the Middle East.

The 133-metre ship docked at Britannia Quay on Friday 24th October, and, along with the Royal British Legion (RBL), hosted the special event, including a formal reception attended by the Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan, Dr Peter Beck.

On Saturday 25th October, members of the ship’s company met the Cardiff community when they visited St David’s Centre and Culverhouse Cross Shopping Centre to collect money on behalf of the Royal British Legion.

At the same time the ship opened her gangway to visitors who took the chance to visit the anti-submarine warship and talk to the sailors about life onboard.
