HMS Richmond’s Engines Fit to Fight

HMS Richmond has been playing host to personnel in the final stages of advanced warfare training while also completing trials to ensure her engines are fit to fight.

The training, which was held off the South West coast, saw the Portsmouth-based Type 23 frigate come under simulated attack from land, sea and air as part of a tough package of exercises designed to put the students to the test.

The trials also allowed HMS Richmond to prove her two Rolls Royce Gas Turbine engines are fully capable of propelling her at speeds of up to 28kts in the harshest of conditions.

This happens every time a ship’s engines have undergone a period of intensive maintenance.

On sailing, HMS Richmond encountered the residual affects of Hurricane Gonzalo – heavy sea states and winds gusting in excess of 50 knots, however, the crew and students, not inexperienced with rough weather, took it in their stride, passing all the trials and training requirements.
