The crew of US Navy’s Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Ingraham (FFG 61) participated in Peru’s annual Navy Day celebration, Oct. 8.
Navy Day occurs every year on the Peruvian naval birthday, Oct. 8. The date also commemorates Gran Almirante Miguel Grau, a national hero of Peru, who sacrificed his life for the country, Oct. 8, 1879.
Sailors from Peruvian, Chilean, Mexican and Colombian navies, as well as representatives for the Malaysian and Italian navies, were in attendance. The ceremony consisted of a wreath presentation from each country and a parade of forces from participating navies.
The event took place after the completion of UNITAS and Silent Forces Exercise (SIFOREX) 2014. UNITAS is the U.S. Navy’s longest running annual multinational maritime exercise, and ran from Sept. 12-26. SIFOREX immediately followed UNITAS and was an opportunity for partner nations of the Americas to collaborate in large-scale antisubmarine warfare evolutions.
Ingraham participated in UNITAS and SIFOREX prior to the Navy Day celebrations, which were the culminating events of a seven and a half month deployment for the crew.
