The Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) held a change of command ceremony, Oct. 17, at Deterrent Park, Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.
Capt. Jason Geddes, a native of Indianapolis, assumed command of Nebraska’s combined Green crew from Capt. Jeffrey Joseph, who has led Nebraska’s Green crew since Nov. 2013 and Gold crew since July 2012.
During Joseph’s tenure, Nebraska completed two strategic deterrent patrols, earned the 2012 Navy League’s Trident Submarine Outstanding Performance Award, the 2013 Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet Battle Efficiency Award (Battle “E”), and the 2013 U.S. Strategic Command Omaha Trophy.
“What a crew,” said Joseph. “You have learned their accomplishments and I do mean their accomplishments. I could go on and, but I will say it has been the highest honor of my professional career to have been your captain. You are not only great at deterrence, but the true test was the combining of our two crews and the shift to [our overhaul period]. All of the success is a testament to the Nebraska crew.”
Joseph’s next assignment will be to U.S. Strategic Command. Geddes most recently served as Section Head for Submarine Tactical System Modernization at Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV) N97.
“During my turnover period I was inspired and amazed by your professionalism, camaraderie and positive attitude,” said Geddes. “We all have quite a journey ahead of us to return Big Red to sea and on her first patrol. This journey especially includes your families and supporters at home. I am confident that you are up to the task.”
Nebraska is currently at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Washington, undergoing an engineered refueling overhaul. The overhaul, which will include a refueling of the submarine’s reactor, is expected to extend Nebraska’s service for 20 more years.
