Sailors from Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Baltimore volunteered to work with civilian curators from Historic Ships in Baltimore to move the frigate USS Constellation (1854) from its berth to the Cianbro ship yard in Baltimore for repairs on the Navy’s 239th birthday, Oct. 13.
“I cannot think of a better day to ride on an historic ship than the Navy Birthday,” said Lt. Lisa Mattrella, training officer, NOSC Baltimore, who was aboard the ship during the transit from her berth in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to the ship yard.

On a cold day with intermittent rain and few visitors in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, civilian curators and Sailors removed shore connections and pulled Constellation out of its berth with the assistance of three commercial tugboats. The tugboats then moved the ship down through the harbor to the shipyard.
The frigate will join the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle (WIX 327), a sail training barque that will be in the yards for repairs at the same time. First, the masts and yards will be removed at ship yard. Then, Constellation will be moved to the U.S. Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore for repairs to the hull in a dry dock. Constellation’s repairs are expected to be completed by late February or early March.
