Capt. Brian Humm relieved Capt. Jerry Logan as commodore, overseeing guided missile submarines USS Ohio (SSGN 726) and USS Michigan (SSGN 727) and currently ballistic missile submarines USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) and USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) undergoing overhaul periods.

“Our role in deterrence, getting the ships overhauled and back to strategic service, is one of the most important things we do for our country,” said Logan. “SSGNs are tremendously capable with Tomahawk strike, Navy Seal delivery and (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance). We go where we need to and the other side does not know we are there to deliver a not-so-subtle message of presence and deterrence.”

During Logan’s tour, he oversaw three ballistic missile submarine engineered refueling overhauls and two guided missile submarine major maintenance periods.

Logan is retiring after 30 years of service, having served as commanding officer of Michigan Blue crew from 2009 to 2011, USS Bremerton (SSN 698) from 2002 to 2006.

Humm, a native of Park Ridge, Ill., most recently served as Director of Operations (N3) for Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic. His notable sea tours include serving as commanding officer of Ohio Blue crew from 2010 to 2012 and commanding officer of USS Buffalo (SSN 715) from 2005 to 2007.

Humm said he looks forward to working with the submarine squadron 19 staff and is thankful to Logan for the team he has turned over to him.

Submarine Squadron 19 is responsible for manning, training and equipping two guided-missile submarines (SSGNs) and all ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) undergoing maintenance in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
