A boat carrying up to 250 African emigrants has sunk off Libyan coast on Sunday, and according to a Libyan navy spokesperson, many passengers have died.

Navy spokesman Ayub Qassem said that only 26 people have been rescued after the incident which occurred near Tajoura, east of the capital Tripoli.

The under-equipped Libya’s coastguard, which mainly exists on paper, had  few resources to search for survivors.

Headed to the European shores, the vessel was filled with mostly African natives.
