Danish Defence Select Committee Visits NATO MARCOM

The Danish Defence Select Committee visited NATO Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) yesterday as part of a broader program of visits to UK-based commands.

Discussions at MARCOM focused on maritime operations, including NATO counter-terrorism Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR in the Mediterranean and counter-piracy Operation OCEAN SHIELD off the Horn of Africa.

The 11 visitors also included a member of the Danish Ministry of Defence and representatives of the Danish Embassy in London. They were welcomed by MARCOM’s Deputy Commander, Vice Admiral Bruno Paulmier, and Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral Giorgio Lazio. The delegation was briefed in the Maritime Operations Centre.

“Close coordination with our Allied national forces is critical to our ability to rapidly adapt to a changing maritime environment,” said Rear Admiral Lazio. “On the heels of the NATO Summit last week in Wales, we have much to do in the months ahead to ensure that our operations in the maritime domain fully support the Alliance’s evolving operational requirements. Denmark’s naval forces will be key contributors to those efforts.”

NATO’s Operation OCEAN SHIELD is currently under Danish command of Commodore Aage Buur Jensen, aboard the operation’s flagship HDMS ESBERN SNARE.
