Italian and Spanish Navies Jointly Conduct Navigation Ops

The Italian Navy is currently leading an international Training Campaign in the Atlantic Ocean for the Cadets of the Naval Academy.

The Spanish corvette Infanta Elena, and the Italian destroyer Luigi Durand de La Penne, commanded by Captain Ostilio de Majo, conducted kinematic maneuvers, flight and telecommunication operations. An inspection team from the Spanish unit conducted a boarding operation on a suspected cargo ship – simulated by the Durand de La Penne, to check the shipping documents.

The aim of the training program is to improve the young cadets’ knowledge of the navigation instruments, procedures and organization.

It has also been an opportunity to boost the cooperation between the two navies and establish the role played by the Italian Navy in terms of Naval Diplomacy.

At the end of the exercise, destroyer Durand de La Penne set sail to Lisbon port – second stop during this campaign – where it was moored from July 28 to August 1.
