ATG San Diego Holds Change of Command

Afloat Training Group (ATG) San Diego held a change of command and retirement ceremony on board the guided missile destroyer USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53), June 27.

During the ceremony, Cmdr. James L. Storm relieved Capt. Thomas P. Shaw as commanding officer of ATG San Diego. Shaw assumed command of ATG San Diego in June 2011 and oversaw the implementation of the Surface Force Readiness Manual (SFRM), which replaced the Surface Force Training Manual as the primary training and readiness instruction for ships going through their training cycle.

As commanding officer, Shaw made it his goal to partner with ships and their Immediate Superior in Command (ISIC) to make ships as combat ready as possible.

Storm enlisted in the Navy in 1983 as an electronics technician. In 1989 he was accepted to the Enlisted Education Advancement Program and was later selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program. His most recent assignment was as executive assistant to Commander, Naval Surface Forces Atlantic.
