15 Sailors from the U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) visited Asian Women’s Welfare Association Students Meet for Interaction, Learning Enrichment Services (AWWA SMILES) for a community relations project, June 27.
AWWA SMILES is a voluntary welfare organization and a full member of the National Council of Social Service, founded in 1970, with the mission to empower the disadvantaged to maximize their potential to lead a dignified and independent life. It has focused programs to teach children life skills, physical activities, leisure exploration and visual and performing arts.
AWWA also has family services centers that provide counseling, financial, enrichment and training support to low-income or needy families and children. In conjunction, AWWA SMILES is a branch for special student care that provides a haven for children with special needs.
“This was the second time George Washington Sailors have visited our organization,” said Erni Nurilyana Kamisran, community partnership executive. “We look forward to having a third visit. I think it is wonderful, so I hope that [Sailors] had a good time and experience.”
George Washington and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interest of the U.S. and its partners and allies in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
