Raytheon Receives 2014 Excellence in Innovation Award

Raytheon Company’s Missile Systems business received the 2014 Excellence in Innovation award from the Arizona Manufacturers Council during a ceremony in Phoenix. The award recognizes RMS for outstanding achievement in innovative manufacturing.

“Raytheon strives to leverage the latest technology in designing the best possible products for all of our customers,” said Kim Ernzen, Raytheon Missile Systems Operations vice president. “By developing solutions in a virtual environment, Raytheon is reducing cycle time and costs while increasing reliability and value.”

Raytheon received the Excellence in Innovation award for the company’s use of its Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE). In the CAVE, Raytheon’s engineering and manufacturing teams work with the company’s information technology experts on stereoscopic 3D and augmented-reality technologies, enabling engineers to collaborate with partners and suppliers on missile designs.

Besides improving teamwork, 3D models and CAVEs are also enhancing the company’s customer presentations. Raytheon uses the CAVE to demonstrate products and solutions by immersing customers in simulated environments complete with 3D imagery and augmented-reality backdrops that feature varied landscapes.

“Raytheon Missile Systems has long been a manufacturing and innovation leader in Arizona,” said Steve Macias, Arizona Manufacturers Council chairman. “It’s not surprising the company would be at the cutting edge of manufacturing design with its CAVE technology. We’re pleased to honor Raytheon with this innovation award.”
