Korean Escort Task Group Talks Anti-Piracy with OCEAN SHIELD Counterparts

Earlier this month, Captain Yu Byeong-Joo, Commander Republic of Korea Naval Escort Task Group, visited NATO Operation OCEAN SHIELD Task Force Commander (CTF-508), Rear Admiral Eugénio Diaz del Rio, on board his flagship to discuss counter-piracy activities.

The Republic of Korea destroyer ROKS KANG GAM CHAN and the Spanish frigate ESPS CRISTÓBAL COLÓN are currently deployed in the Indian Ocean, conducting counter-piracy operations.

Captain Yu and members from his staff arrived via the ROKS’ helicopter and were welcomed on board COLÓN, while a delegation from the Spanish warship returned aboard the helicopter to visit the ROKS destroyer.

During his stay on board the CTF-508 flagship, Captain Yu was briefed on current counter-piracy activities and the capabilities of the newest Spanish AEGIS frigate.

The delegation toured the ship while both ships conducted several manoeuvring and tactical exercises.

“We have enjoyed a good working relationship with the Republic of Korea Navy during this deployment, and I want to continue to build upon those efforts with the Group’s new commander,” said Rear Admiral Diaz del Rio.
