Naval Base Kitsap Bangor was put on high security alert on March 31 while responding to an incident near the base perimeter. Kitsap County Sherriff and NCIS coordinated with base security conducting security sweeps in response to what was reported to be loud noises sounding like gun shots, Naval Base Kitsap said in a release.

The Trident Gate on highway 305 was closed and personnel in buildings in the area were required to shelter in place. Navy officials explained that security sweeps across the base confirmed that there were no evidence of shots being fired.

The base was put into lockdown as a precautionary measure, however the lockdown was lifted later in the day and the personnel continued normal work activities.

No personnel injuries have been reported.

The navy personnel are tightening their security measures across U.S. naval bases in the wake of the tragic shooting from last week (March 24) that took place onboard guided missile destroyer USS Mahan (DDG 72) at Pier 1.

Namely, a sailor was gunned down by a civilian, who was subsequently killed as well by the naval security forces.
