USS CARL VINSON

USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) was awarded the Dorie P. Miller Wardroom Mess Award and Disbursing Excellence Award for the Pacific Fleet on Feb. 26.

The awards are just two of the supply department’s most recent recognitions to include the Supply Blue “E” and the Ship’s Store Retail and Service Excellence Award.

“I’m extremely proud of the supply department and these recognitions validate their unwavering commitment,” said Cmdr. Justin Debord, supply officer aboard Carl Vinson.

A message from Commander Air Forces Pacific revealed the results of the 2013 Commander Naval Air Forces Supply Services Excellence Awards for the aircraft carrier fleet. The message announced Carl Vinson’s two latest awards and that she is a runner-up for the Postal Excellence Award.

“They are all champions,” said Debord. “Across the board, all of our food service, retail, postal, repair part and financial operations, they work extremely hard each and every day to support our customer focused mission and positively impact the quality of life for all on board.”

The Dorie P. Miller Award recognizes the most outstanding barbershop, laundry and stateroom operations within the aircraft carrier community.

The award is named for Doris “Dorie” Miller, a cook in the U.S. Navy noted for his brave actions during the attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. He was the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross.

The Disbursing Excellence Award recognizes outstanding carrier disbursing operations based on results from the supply management inspection and an unscheduled disbursing audit.

For the achievement, Carl Vinson will receive a commemorative plaque in recognition of its exceptional accomplishments. These annual awards encourage superb service with the objective of improving the quality of life for shipboard Sailors.
