Fincantieri, RosRAO Ink Nuclear Submarine Reactor Compartments Contract

RosRAO signed an international contract with the Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri (Fincantieri – Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.a») for detailed engineering and building of a pontoon to ship nuclear submarine reactor compartments.

By the open tender the contract was awarded to the Italian company, which has an extensive international experience in building special-purpose vessels.

The pontoon is intended for lifting three-compartment units on the slipway at Saida Bay branch of the North-West Center for Radioactive Waste Management SevRAO, a branch of RosRAO in Murmansk Region. The work scope includes writing of the design documentation, manufacture of the pontoon, its launching, outfitting, testing and towing. The contracted work is planned to accomplish in 2015.

The financing is provided by the Ministry of Economic Development of the Italian Republic (MSE) under the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Italian Republic concerning the cooperation in the field of disposal of the Russian nuclear submarines retired from the Navy and the safe management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, which was signed in Rome on November 5, 2003 with subsequent exchange of diplomatic notes on April 2, 2004 and May 25, 2004 in Rome and on May 7, 2004 in Moscow.
