In September, just in time to participate in the International Fleet Review, HMAS Huon returned from four months on deployment, including a 12-week stint on Operation Resolute.
The swift deployment was a great achievement for the ship’s company of 46 who deployed on 24-hours notice.
CO Huon LCDR Jace Hutchison said he was very proud of his crew for its hard work and achievements during the border protection operation.
“The highlight of the deployment was that a MHC platform was able to participate successfully in Operation Resolute and complete the job expected of us.” he said.
During her time on deployment, Huon searched for and relocated a rescue craft that was lost by the merchant vessel MV Far Grip , initially located by a Coastwatch aircraft. This was no easy feat, but with a thorough SAR plan and a bit of luck the $250,000 craft was located and a rendezvous established to return it to another vessel owned by the company.
During the period away Huon was also involved in Exercise CASSOWARY with HMAS Wollongong , and Indonesian Navy vessels KRI Hui and KRI Kakap . This bi-annual exercise is aimed at strengthening Australian/Indonesian ties, and to develop the interoperability and boarding capabilities of both nations.
Huon was met by many family and friends on her return to HMAS Waterhen on Sydney Harbour. Commander Mine Warfare, Hydrographic and Patrol Boat Force, Captain Bob Plath, presented Defence Children’s Recognition Medallions to some of the children welcoming Huon home.
