US Navy Deploys Aware’s Mobile Biometric Solution

Equipment & technology

Aware, Inc, a leading global provider of biometrics software and services, yesterday announced that the US Navy has deployed a mobile biometric solution supplied by Aware as part of the Navy’s Identity Dominance program.

The solution includes a hardware-agnostic software application developed by Aware to operate on third-party ruggedized biometric capture devices. The application uses software APIs that are part of Aware’s COTS SDK product offerings, and provides a user interface designed specifically for use by military personnel in challenging environments. Aware also supplies the Navy with its Biometric Services Platform (BioSP), which is used by the Navy to centrally manage and update the software on the devices.

The development of the software application was funded through multiple phases of a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award initially won by Aware in 2010. As a key supplier to the program, Aware procures third-party hardware, installs and tests the software on the devices, and delivers a complete solution to the US Navy. The effort was an SBIR success story. This project led to the procurement of the first mobile biometric solution in the Department of Defense to achieve the status of “Program of Record,” and is one of a small number of Programs of Record for biometric solutions. Less than 5% of SBIR awards lead to a “Phase III” production stage, and many fewer lead to Programs of Record.

“The successful Navy deployment represents a major achievement for our team, and demonstrates Aware’s ability to execute at several levels on large, complex projects,” commented Rob Mungovan, Vice President of Aware’s Biometrics and Imaging group. “We’re pleased to see the solution at work in the field, and look forward to future opportunities to leverage our deep expertise in mobile biometrics.”

Aware will provide demonstrations of its software products in its booth at the Biometrics Consortium Conference and Technology Expo taking place September 17-19 in Tampa.
