Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus concluded a visit to Senegal Aug. 22, the last stop on a multi-nation visit focused on reinforcing existing partnerships with African nations.
“Senegal is the backbone of the Navy and Marine Corps’ martime cooperation in West Africa,” said Mabus. “We have a strong and important relationship through exercises, training, and operations to protect the seas, particularly the Gulf of Guinea. We look forward to exploring ways to grow that relationship.”
During meetings with Senegal’s President Macky Sall, Chief of Armed Forces Brig. Gen. Mamadou Sow and Chief of Staff of the Navy Rear Adm. Cheikh Bara Cissoko, Mabus noted Senegal’s commitment to democracy and regional stability.
“We appreciate your support of the African-led International Support Mission to Mali and the leadership you have demonstrated in peacekeeping missions not only in Africa, but around the world,” said Mabus.
Mabus visited Senegal’s maritime operations center which allows Senegal to monitor maritime traffic and respond to potential illicit activity in their waters.
Mabus also met with Sailors and Marines stationed at the U.S. embassy to thank them for their service. Mabus’ visit represents a continuation of the Department of the Navy’s focus on building partnerships designed to help distribute the burden of securing the global maritime domain based on alliances, shared values and mutual trust.
