USA: Explosion at Naval Weapon Station Earle

Eight people were injured in an explosion which occurred at the Naval Weapon Station Earle, New Jersey, yesterday morning about 9 a.m.

Police officials report that the explosion happened at the base, an ammunition depot, about 72 km from New York City, during maintenance works on a 35-foot utility vessel.

According to abclocal.go.com, the officials were able to contain the damage within the boathouse area and the situation has been stabilized.

Naval Weapons Station Earle is a United States Navy base in New Jersey. Its distinguishing feature is a 2.9-mile pier in Sandy Hook Bay where ammunition can be loaded and unloaded from warships at a safe distance from heavily-populated areas.
