USA: GD-NASSCO Bags $82.4 Mln Deal for IKE’s Maintenance

General Dynamics-NASSCO Earl Industries, based in Portsmouth, Va., has received a $82.4 million modification to a previously awarded contract for the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (IKE) fiscal 2013 dry-docking planned incremental availability.

Under the contract, during its scheduled maintenance period IKE will undergo alterations of aircraft electrical servicing system station to radar tower, emergency diesel generator 3 and 4 exhaust, disposable air filter outfitting along with installation of aqueous film forming foam fire extinguisher. This will be followed by installation of 50-man life raft on the port side, modification of aviation engine hatch platform, removal of an accommodation ladder, close-in weapon system sponson support and upgrade of security department facilities.

Ready room security stowage and medical sterilizer will be upgraded as well.

The necessary maintenance forms part of a scheduled docking planned incremental availability (DPIA) period.

A DPIA period is a time for a ship to undergo work and to receive needed improvements to maintain its optimal running efficiency. Over the course of the DPIA, IKE will go through both ship’s-force maintenance and contractor work to obtain this goal.

USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (IKE) began an ammunition offload Aug. 6 to prepare the ship for an upcoming docked planned incremental availability (DPIA) at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

IKE is scheduled to head to the shipyard in September for a 14-month maintenance period. Work will be performed in Portsmouth, Va., and is expected to be completed by November 2014.
