Iran Launches Jamaran 2 Destroyer

Iran has launched a new domestically built destroyer “Jamaran 2” in the Caspian Sea, according to Tehran Times.

The launching ceremony of the ship was held on March 17 at the port city of Bandar-e Anzali, where the defense staff gathered and attended the ceremony.

The Jamaran 2 is a Moudge class destroyer, which is  a class of domestically produced Iranian light frigates. It  is a development of the Alvand class (British Saam class) design.

The class is described as Destroyers by the Iranian state media, but the size and weight of the ships ( 1,500 ton displacement) are more in keeping with that of light frigates.

This type of ships is also referred to as Destroyer Escorts.

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said that the ship is about 100 meters long and weighs over 1,300 tons.

What is more, Jamaran 2 features electronic warfare systems, artillery and anti-aircraft guns, followed by surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles and torpedoes.

The destroyer is going to undergo final tests over the next months, and it would join the Iranian Navy in the first half of the next Iranian calendar Year, starting on March 21st.

Iran announced that the country   also intends to build seven destroyers of the Sina class.
