Russian Navy to Receive over Hundred Surface Ships, Submarines

Russian Navy is going to receive over a hundred new surface ships and submarines of different classes in the upcoming years, said the President of Russia Vladimir Putin according to Portnews.ru.

“I want to emphasize again that the development of strong and effective Navy is one of Russia’s key priorities. We will consistently develop underwater and surface vessels, strengthen conventional forces and naval strategic nuclear forces,” Portnews.ru cited Putin as saying.

“In coming years, the fleet will receive over one hundred new surface ships and submarines of different classes. We are fully committed to implementing this ambitious programme. At present the Russian shipyards are developing and building new ships; design centres are creating new marine technology…And we are planning to build up the rate of the fleet’s renewal and growth,”  Putin added.

At the very end of last year the Russian Navy commissioned a newly-built submarine into the fleet, i.e., Project 955 Borei nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) Yury Dolgoruky.

What is more, on the same day of December 30th, another Borei-class submarine SSBN Vladimir Monomakh was launched in Severodvinsk.

Eight strategic submarines are to be built and delivered to Russian Navy till 2020 under arms procurement program; three of them are Project 955 Borei four-generation subs with 16 SLBMs Bulava each, and five are Project 955A Borei-A fifth-generation subs with 20 SLBMs Bulava each.
