As we wrote earlier, the U.S. Navy is going to scrap the nation’s oldest active duty warship USS Enterprise (“Big E”).

USS Enterprise is the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the eighth United States naval vessel to bear the name. Like her predecessor of World War II fame, she is nicknamed the “Big E”.

The only ship of her class, Enterprise is the second oldest commissioned vessel in the United States Navy, after the wooden-hulled, three-masted frigate USS Constitution.

The work will be performed in Norfolk, Virginia, and is expected to be completed by June 2013.

GD  NASSCO is one of three shipyards in the Marine Systems group of General Dynamics Corporation. General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 90,000 people worldwide. The company is a market leader in business aviation; land and expeditionary combat systems, armaments and munitions; shipbuilding and marine systems; and information systems and technologies.
