Sri Lanka Navy intercepted a multi-day fishing trawler bearing the registered no: IMUL-A-0077-CHW 3 nautical miles off Vettilaikerni on 14th August 2012 with 4 Tamil persons who were attempting to head for Australia illegally.
The midnight interception was made by a Coastguard craft on patrol from the Northern Naval Command.
Preliminary interrogations revealed that the group was loitering to collect more people for the escapade from different locations in the Eastern coast. They were handed over to PPD Police for further investigations.
