UK: Families Experience Their Loved Ones’ Working Environment aboard HMS Illustrious

Families Experience Their Loved Ones’ Working Environment aboard HMS Illustrious

The Nation’s high readiness carrier, HMS Illustrious, has swapped her helicopters and Royal Marines Commandos for family members as they enjoyed a families’ day at sea.

HMS Illustrious hosted just over 800 family members, providing a unique and exciting opportunity to gain an insight into life on board a Royal Navy warship at sea.

With the weather remaining fair, families spent most of the day on the Ship’s flight deck. Although many of the families on board had experienced waving to the crowds from Portsmouth’s famous round tower, this was a rare chance for them to wave to those on the round tower from the Ship.

The day included sailing south of the Isle of Wight; flying demonstrations from Fleet Air Arm Lynx Mk8 and Sea King Mk4 helicopters; fire fighting demonstrations.

It was a fantastic opportunity for family members to experience their loved ones’ working environment and the everyday jobs they perform.

Leading Seaman Andrew Cumbers said:

“My family had a fantastic day and very much enjoyed the opportunity to get an insight into what I do when I’m away with Illustrious at sea on deployment”.
