A new damage control simulator aptly named “Avinash” was commissioned at Naval Base Kochi on 12 Apr 12 by Vice Admiral KN Sushil, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command. This is the second damage control simulator under Southern Naval Command, the first one being at INS Shivaji at Lonavla, in Maharashtra.

Avinash has been designed to provide traini ng to fight damage on board warships. It is a three deck ship like structure which can si mulate various types of leaks, high pressure pipe bursts and power failure as a result of possible torpedo or missile hit. The structure also simulates movement of the ship in rough seas using microprocessor based hydraulic power, as they fight and contain the simula ted damage. The facility has arrangements for monitoring the trainees after initiating various scenarios as well as video record and review trainees’ actions. The damage control simulator has been constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited at a cost of Rupees 29 Crores.
