Russia: Severnaya Verf Shipyard to Construct 13 Warships

Severnaya Verf Shipyard to Construct 13 Warships for Russian Navy

St. Petersburg based JSC Severnaya Verf Shipyard has been contracted by the Defense Ministry to construct 13 warships for the Russian Navy. The contract includes construction of six corvettes of the Project 20385 and the Project 20380, six Project 22350 frigates and a reconnaissance ship.

Official keel-laying ceremony of the Project 20385 lead corvette Gremyaschiy took place at Severnaya Verf’s slipways on February 1st. The project was developed by Almaz design bureau and is a modernized version of the Project 20380.

Combat capabilities of the new Project 20385 corvette outclass those of European and Russian analogs. Major advantages of the corvette are versatility, low signature, high automation level, fast speed, and improved air defense capability. Displacement of Project 20385 corvette is 2,200 tons; length is 104 meters; beam is 13 meters; speed is 27 knots; fuel range is 4,000 miles; crew is 100 men. The ship is armed with Uran strike missile system, 100-mm gun mount, air defense system, tactical data system, sonar, trailed antenna, and deck-based helicopter Ka-27. The corvette has low underwater noise and sonar jamming levels. By virtue of special architectural and design solutions, the ship’s secondary radar and infrared signatures are considerably reduced.

Displacement of Project 20380 corvettes is 2,000 tons, length is over 100 meters, max speed is 27 knots, operating range is 4,000 miles. Among main advantages there are multifunctionality, compactness, low signature, high level of automation and integration of control systems.

The frigates of Project 22350 were designed by Northern Design Construction Bureau in 2003-2005. Total displacement of a Project 22350 ship is 4,500 tons; length is 130 meters; beam is 16 meters; draft is 4.5 meters; speed is 29 knots; crew is 210. Armament: 130-mm gun mount A-192; 8 anti-ship missiles 3M55 Onyx; 8 Medvedka-2 ASW missiles; 24 missiles of Uragan SAM system; Ka-32 helicopter.

At present, Severnaya Verf is building four Project 20380 corvettes, two Project 22350 frigates, and a Project 18280 special communication vessel for the Russian Navy.
