Russia: Severnaya Verf to Build Nuclear-Powered Warships, Andrei Fomichev Says

JSC Severnaya Verf shipyard has obtained license to perform works associated with nuclear reactors, the yard’s director general Andrei B. Fomichev told Central Navy Portal.

According to Fomichev, “now Severnaya Verf is authorized to work with nuclear powerplants. Federal Service for Environmental, Technological, and Nuclear Oversight granted an appropriate certificate to the shipyard”. “We start low and go slow preparing to produce equipment for ground-based nuclear electric power stations, special accessories and pipelines”, Fomichev said.

Russian Navy’s long-term development program includes construction of large ocean-going destroyer powered by nuclear reactor, Navy Commander-in-Chief ADM Vladimir Vysotsky earlier reiterated.

“We have obtained a certificate allowing nuclear-related production and are ready for new prospective order in full accordance with arms procurement program”, said Fomichev. “Big money has been invested, the shipyard is certified, number of specialists received personal certificates including me. All that was done for a reason”, he concluded.
