Russian defense ministry plans to purchase 8 multipurpose and 8 strategic nuclear-powered submarines by 2020, said Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov.
“So far, we have plans to build eight subs of each project [eight Yasen-class SSGNs and eight Borei-class SSBNs]” , the general said answering the question whether the ministry really decided to buy more submarines, reports RIA Novosti .
“Increasing of submarines’ procurement is being worked out” , he said.
Earlier, it was planned to purchase 20 submarines, 35 corvettes, 15 frigates, and put in service 8 Borei -class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines which are platforms for SLBMs Bulava .
