Further Iranian Naval Exercises Evoke Considerable Concern

Further Iranian naval exercises evoke a considerable concern regarding the potential shipping risk. Upon conducting previous exercises, Iranian Navy conducted boardings and inspections of merchant ships, including those flagged to European nations.

Exercises planned to be carried out between December 2011 and March 2012 near the Strait of Hormuz, particularly in areas closer to Iranian territorial waters, impose the possibility that Iran will intend to conduct boardings and inspections during such activities.

Vessel Masters have been provided with the recommendation to protest but comply in case a vessel is hailed for boarding by the Iranian Navy in international waters. The incident should be reported to all interested parties and Command Centers of Navies in the region.
