Philippines Relaunches Old US Coast Guard Cutter

The Philippines relaunched an old U.S. Coast Guard cutter on Wednesday to guard potentially oil-rich waters that are at the center of a conflict with China.

President Benigno Aquino III, who observed the commissioning of the 3,390-ton Philippine navy frigate BRP Gregorio del Pilar in a Manila pier ceremony, said that it denoted his country’s struggle to advance its underfunded military despite many obstacles.

The Philippines, a U.S. defense treaty partner, has resorted to Washington to obtain better surveillance and patrol ships and aircraft for its military. Aquino said the Philippines would gain another U.S. Coast Guard cutter soon. He is also planning to seek used fighter jets from Washington during his visit planned for next year.

In March, two Chinese vessels attempted to drive away a Philippine oil exploration ship from the Reed Bank. However, Chine refused to admit there were any intrusions since it believes it has sovereignty over those waters.

The Philippine is planning to deploy the new warship to waters west of Palawan, especially around an area called Malampaya, site of the country’s largest natural gas field.
