A&P Group is nearing the completion of one of its largest projects to-date: the fabrication of blocks that will form part of the UK’s new aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth. The modules will be loaded from the A&P Tyne yard at Hebburn onto barges in September. They will then be transported to Rosyth, Scotland, where the first carrier will be assembled.
The massive modules will form part of the carrier’s flight deck and hangar. The project, worth £55M to the Tyne yard, began in February 2010 with many of the workers at the yard involved in the project as it progressed.
In May this year 800t of metal came together in a precision planned operation at the yard to join two cross-sections of the carrier. The double module measured a massive 40m wide, 26m long and 9m deep.
