US Navy seal dies after parachute malfunctions during New York Fleet Week demonstration

A U.S. Navy seal from the Leap Frogs parachute team died after his parachute failed to open properly during a New York Fleet Week demonstration, the navy said.

The tragic incident occurred around noon on Sunday while the Leap Frogs were performing a coordinated parachute jump over the Hudson River.

The service member landed in the river and was retrieved immediately by the U.S. Coast Guard personnel who were specifically standing by in vessels to support the event, and transported to Jersey City Medical Center for care.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, and I ask for all of your prayers for the Navy SEAL community who lost a true patriot today,” said Rear Adm. Jack Scorby, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic.

The navy said the incident was under investigation and withheld the service member’s name until family notifications are complete.
