Australia hosts second submarine industry day

Prime contractors from the Royal Australian Navy’s Future Submarine Program started the second submarine industry day during which they will brief Australian industry on opportunities available in the Program.

The briefing started Thursday at the National Maritime Museum in Sydney.

Minister for Defence Industry, Christopher Pyne MP, said this engagement with defence industry demonstrates the commitment to maximising Australian industry involvement in the Future Submarine Program.

Australia’s Future Submarine program will see French shipbuilder DCNS build 12 Shortfin Barracuda submarines for the Australian Navy at a cost of AUD 50 billion.

“Australian industry involvement is central to realising our objective of developing a sovereign submarine capability for the nation,” Minister Pyne said.

“The Future Submarine Industry briefings are providing valuable opportunities for Australian companies to understand how they can become involved in supporting this Australia’s Future Submarine Program.

“Briefings will be provided by the Department of Defence, DCNS, Australia’s international partner for the design of the 12 future submarines, and Lockheed Martin Australia, the Combat Systems Integrator.

Minister Pyne said “an Australian submarine build is expected to generate an annual average of around 2,800 jobs”
