US Navy cruiser runs aground in Japan

The U.S. Navy confirmed its Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54) damaged its propellers while anchoring during high winds on January 31.

Antietam was trying to anchor in Tokyo Bay in the vicinity of Yokosuka, Japan.

While no personnel were injured, the ship discharged hydraulic oil following the accident.

The navy further said that the ship returned to Fleet Activities Yokosuka with the help of tugs as it was not able to maneuver on its own.

An investigation is now underway to assess the full extent of the damage.

The 30-year-old Antietam is the eighth Ticonderoga-class cruiser and third U.S. Navy ship to be named after the Battle of Antietam. The ship has been homeported in Yokosuka, Japan since 2013.
