Atlas Elektronik, Magellan Aerospace sign MOU for anti-torpedo torpedo development

Atlas Elektronik and Magellan Aerospace have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the development of rocket motor and warhead sections of the SeaSpider Anti-Torpedo Torpedo (ATT).

Once completed, the SeaSpider will provide ATT capability for hard-kill defence against all torpedoes in use. The fully assembled SeaSpider system will employ Canadian rocket and propellant technology.

Unlike the decoy system the Danish frigate Iver Huitfeldt recently tested, the SeaSpider detects and destroys the attacking torpedoes. Atlas Elektronik claims this solution is independent of the torpedo type and therefore superior to conventional approaches which use decoys and similar effectors.

Currently at technology readiness level 6, the co-development phase will work to transition the system to production maturity through the explosive section of the SeaSpider.

Atlas Elektronik and Magellan Aerospace will also seek concurrent qualification and certification for NATO and Allied force deployment.

During the co-development phase, Atlas Elektronik Canada, located in Victoria, BC, will work with Magellan Aerospace out of their facilities in Winnipeg and Rockwood, MB. Atlas Elektronik Naval Weapons Division in Wedel, Germany will provide ongoing support, the company said.

Rick Gerbrecht, President and CEO of Atlas Elektronik Canada commented: “We are pleased to be working with Magellan Aerospace, a proven supplier of rocket propellant systems to NASA where quality and dependability to operate in harsh conditions is a mandatory.”
