Austal has launched the second high speed support vessel (HSSV) it is building for the Royal Navy of Oman.

The Australian company said the vessel was ready for the naming ceremony scheduled for April 15.

This second, 72-meter, vessel was built under a US$124.9 million contract the company received in March 2014 from the Royal Navy of Oman.

Austal started construction works on the first HSSV in August 2014. The RNOV AI Mubshir, as the first ship was named, was launched October 21, 2015 after 13 months of construction and fit-out at the company’s Henderson, Western Australia shipyard.

The high speed support vessels (HSSV), based on the expeditionary fast transport (EPF) platform – previously known as the joint high speed vessel (JHSV), are multi-mission capable catamarans. According to Austal, the vessels have a capacity of 325 tonnes and reach speeds of 35 Knots.
