Draper bags US Navy Trident D5 guidance systems contract

The U.S. Navy has awarded the American engineering company Charles Stark Draper Laboratory a contract to produce guidance systems for the Trident (D5) MK 6 fleet ballistic missile.

The overall maximum value of the contract can reach $163,5 million if all options are exercised.

Draper will also provide failure verification, test, repair and recertification of inertial measurement units, electronic assemblies, and electronic modules.

The systems will go on both the U.S. Navy’s Ohio-class and UK’s Vanguard-class submarines. Work is expected to be completed by January 2020.

According to the U.S. Navy, the Trident II (D5) was first deployed in 1990 and is planned to be deployed past 2020.
