CNSP Checks on USS Pearl Harbor Maintenance Progress

Commander, Naval Surface Forces visited the amphibious dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor (LPD 52) at the Continental Maritime San Diego (CMSD) Shipyard, Jan. 21, to check on the ship’s progress during an extended docking period maintenance availability (EDPMA).

The nature of Vice Adm. Thomas S. Rowden’s visit was to get a better understanding of Pearl Harbor’s status during the mid-life upgrade, to communicate his priorities during the availability, and to hear from the Sailors on board the ship.

Rowden began his visit with command leadership before sitting down with the wardroom. After a spot promotion of the new chief engineer, Lt. Cmdr. Nellie Wang, and a surface warfare officer designation pinning, he discussed the future of surface warfare.

In further discussions with the ship’s chief petty officer’s mess, he also discussed planned maintenance system issues, several new initiatives, and overall Sailor morale.

Rowden wrapped up his visit with a tour of the ship to see the major upgrades Pearl Harbor is receiving.
