USS Iwo Jima Transit Through the Strait of Messina

After paying a scheduled port visit to Civitavecchia, Italy on December 30, USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), US Navy’s amphibious assault ship, continued it deployment. 

The vessel soon took on a southbound transit through the Strait of Messina to carry on with conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe.

Iwo Jima is the flagship of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (IWO ARG)/24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24 MEU), which is comprised of embarked Marines from the 24th MEU, amphibious dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) and amphibious transport dock ship USS New York (LPD 21).
