NNS Okpabana Enters Nigerian Navy Fleet

The Nigerian Navy has recently expanded its fleet of warships with a former United States Coast Guard cutter.

The vessel NNS Okpabana, once named USCGC Gallatin, entered Nigerian waters on January 2 for its formal reception in Lagos. Prior to joining the Navy’s fleet, the vessel underwent a $8.5 million refurbishment.

According to defenceWeb, NNS Okpabana is the second Hamilton class cutter donated to Nigeria by the US.

The vessel will be used to combat piracy, oil theft, smuggling, illegal fishing and arms smuggling.
