US Navy’s Birthday Celebrated on USS San Diego

Sailors and Marines of amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22) celebrated the Navy’s 239th birthday on October 13.

After the USS San Diego’s choir delivered the national anthem, the crew stood at ease as Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Kalis Fells introduced the guest speaker for the ceremony, Chief Electronics Technician Marc Sessions, the oldest Sailor aboard.

“It was an honor to speak and give some wisdom to the younger generations and be a part of this important remembrance,” said Sessions. “It was my first time speaking to such a large group but it was nice to see both younger and older Sailors in the crowd.”

San Diego is a part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, and with the embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
