Commanding Officer of the U.S. Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia Capt. Robert Clark said in a statement yesterday that the shooting from Monday night took place onboard guided missile destroyer USS Mahan (DDG 72) at Pier 1.

A sailor was gunned down on Monday night at approximately 11:20 p.m. by a civilian, who was subsequently killed as well by the naval security forces

“The suspect approached the Mahan’s Quarterdeck and was confronted by ship security personnel. A struggle ensued and the suspect was able to disarm the Petty Officer of the Watch. The suspect then used the weapon to fatally shoot our Sailor responding to render assistance. Naval security forces then killed the suspect. The suspect did not have his own weapon,” Capt. Robert Clark explained.

The U.S. Navy put the station on lockdown immediately as a precaution measure, which was lifted subsequently. There were no injuries reported.

An investigation is underway concerning the details surrounding the shooting, including hearings of the personnel who witnessed the shooting.
