The US Navy ship USS Independence stopped in Humbolt Bay Harbor for refueling today, the Times Standard reported.

Captain John Powell, Humboldt Bay Harbor District Bar Pilot, said that the littoral combat ship (LCS) arrived to Schneider Dock and Intermodal Facility on Waterfont Drive in Eureka and that it was taking fuel. The ship will return three more times and the first return will be on Friday, he added.

USS Independence is the lead ship of the independence class LCS, which was delivered to the Navy in 2009.

The ship’s design is based on a high-speed trimaran hull, built by Henderson-based Austal. The ship is 147 meters long and requires a crew of 40 sailors.
