HII Wins USD 32 Mln for USS Montpelier's Repair

Huntington Ingalls Inc. (HII) has scored a USD 32 million modification to existing delivery order no. 4T14 under a previously awarded basic ordering agreement for collision damage repairs to the USS Montpelier.

HII will provide expert inspection, repair and material support services for this effort. Work will be performed in Newport News, Va., and is expected to be completed by July 2013.

The Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair, Newport News, Va., is the contracting activity.

USS Montpelier collided with the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56) off the coast of Florida Oct. 13, 2012.

The investigation revealed that the principal cause of the collision was human error, poor teamwork by the Montpelier watch team, and the commanding officer’s failure to follow established procedures for submarines operating at periscope depth.  Both Montpelier and San Jacinto were conducting routine training at the time of the accident. No personnel aboard either vessel were injured.

Capt. Blake Converse, Commander, Submarine Squadron 6, relieved Cmdr. Thomas Winter, commanding officer of the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Montpelier (SSN 765), of his duties Jan. 4 due to loss of confidence in Winter’s ability to command.
