Detyens Shipyards Receives USNS Robert E. Peary Contract

Detyens Shipyards Inc. has received an $ 8.5 million contract for the regular overhaul and dry docking of dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Robert E. Peary (T-AKE 5).

The shipyard will undertake considerable amount of work including:  inspecting the propeller shaft and stern tube; installing a reverse osmosis desalination unit to produce fresh water; installing a chlorpac unit; overhauling sea valves; and cleaning and painting the underwater hull.

USNS Robert E. Peary is one of Military Sealift Command’s fourteen Dry Cargo/Ammunition Ships and is part of the 34 ships in Military Sealift Command’s Combat Logistics Force.

Her primary mission is to operate as part of a carrier strike group, providing fuel, ammunition, and dry and refrigerated stores to support the Navy ships at sea, enabling them to remain underway for extended periods.

The work will be performed in North Charleston, S.C., and is expected to be completed by May 2013.

Detyens Shipyards, Inc. operates a commercial shipyard on the Cooper River in Charleston, South Carolina. It offers crane services and machine shops; graving docks and piers; and commercial ship repair services, including naval repair and foreign military sales, and repairing and/or up-grading military vessels. The company was founded in 1961 and is based in North Charleston, South Carolina.
