Yesterday, Darleen and I welcomed our Japanese friends, the new Chief of Staff of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Adm. Katsutoshi Kawano and his wife, Mariko. Darleen and I had the privilege of living in Japan for three years during my time on the 7th fleet staff and this was a very special event to have them here. I’ve watched the relationship between our countries grow and continue to grow stronger. We have had an alliance for over 50 years, and it is this alliance that has been so key to the security in Asia. The Japan Maritime Self Defense Force is a great service with a long tradition of skill and competence. They bring incredible capability that we will work to partner with and expand upon they are a top-tier, top-notch partner that I’m honored and privileged to serve with. I look forward to the time together with my new counterpart!

Topics discussed included U.S. and JMSDF partnership, Japan’s role in upcoming International Mine Countermeasures exercise, and JMSDF counterpiracy operations in the Gulf of Aden.
